What Type of Training Is Involved in Foundations for Fund Directors?
Foundations for Fund Directors consists of two parts: online and in-person training. The online training will be available beginning in late August. The in-person training will take place September 12–13 at the KPMG Boston office located at Two Financial Center, 60 South Street, Boston, MA 02111.
What Is the Difference Between the Online Training and the In-Person Session?
The online training course is a prerequisite for the in-person session. It will give a high-level overview of the fund industry and directors’ responsibilities through a series of modules on the following topics:
- guiding principles of fund governance, including a director’s independence and fiduciary duties to promote the interests of shareholders;
- a review of two of independent fund directors’ most important responsibilities: the advisory contract renewal process and oversight of investment management and performance; and
- four select areas of board oversight: fair valuation, liquidity, compliance, and risk management.
After completing the online training, program participants will apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios and case studies during the interactive, in-person session.
How Do I Determine If I Am Eligible to Register?
Registration for this program is open only to independent directors of ICI member funds. The program is designed for newer independent directors (those with up to three years of experience). If you are uncertain of your status or the status of your firm’s membership, please contact the ICI Conference Division to clarify.
May I Participate in Just the Online Training or In-Person Training Only?
No. Foundations for Fund Directors is a single program with two components. One price covers registration for both components. The online training is a prerequisite for the in-person session.
How Do I Access the Online Training Materials?
The online training will be accessible through larger-format digital devices, including tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. We will email you detailed instructions when it is available.
Is There a Deadline to Register for the Program?
No, but space is limited to 30 participants. Anyone who registers after we reach capacity will be placed on a waitlist for the September session. We will contact you if space becomes available. If no space becomes available, you will be given priority to register for the next session, which we will schedule shortly.
What Is the Registration Cancellation Policy?
Cancellations received by September 5 are subject to a $500 administrative fee. To cancel your registration, please email email@example.com. Cancellations will not be accepted by telephone. After September 5, we regret that no registration fees can be refunded.
Will Foundations for Fund Directors Be Offered Again?
Yes. We plan to offer additional in-person sessions in 2018 at locations throughout the country.
How Can I Make a Hotel Reservation?
There are several hotels located near the KPMG Boston office at Two Financial Center; please visit the hotel information page.
I Have Dietary Restrictions or Other Special Needs. How Do I Let the Organizer Know?

Are CLE and CPE Credits Available?
No, CLE and CPE credits are not available.
Is Foundations for Fund Directors Open to the Media?
No, the training and its events are closed to the media.
What Is the Dress Code for the In-Person Training?
Business casual dress is appropriate.
Will Wi-Fi Be Available at the In-Person Training Session?
Yes, free Wi-Fi will be available to participants at the in-person training session.
How Do I Check In Onsite?
Upon entering Two Financial Center, please check in at the main security desk. You will then be directed to the second-floor conference center where the training session will take place.
What Is the Closest Airport?
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), is located about four miles from the KPMG Boston Office.
Is Parking Available at the KPMG Boston Office?
Parking is very limited at the KPMG Boston Office, so public transportation is highly recommended. The KPMG Boston Office is located directly across from South Station.
May I Get a Receipt for My Registration Payment?
Yes. Your confirmation email will contain the financial record of your conference registration payment. If you have misplaced your confirmation email or need another copy, please contact the ICI Conference Division.
How long will I have access to the online course?
You will have access to the online course for one year.
i can’t get to the next screen in the online course. What’s wrong?
The first time you work through a module, you’ll need to click on each item on the screen before you can proceed to the next screen. This includes any “Did You Know?” icons in the lower left corner of the screen. Once you’ve completed a module, it will “unlock,” enabling you to proceed from screen to screen without clicking on each item.
